The building at 862 Broadway in Manhattan, NYC, has a rich history dating back to 1848. It was one of four speculative brick-faced homes constructed by the Manhattan Bank Company, completed in the Greek Revival style. The house was initially purchased by Daniel M. Edgar in 1849, a socially prestigious figure who had married Julia Lorillard.
By around 1851, the Edgars had moved out, and the ground floor was converted into a drugstore. Over the years, the building housed various businesses, including a boarding house, the Germicide Company, Errico Brothers' gallery, and Herbert L. Greenbaum's antiques store.
A significant fire occurred on September 11, 1901, damaging much of Greenbaum's stock. The building was repaired and later became home to C. E. Riker, a manufacturer of surgical instruments, and other businesses.
In 1910, Peter M. Reilly opened a cigar shop there. The building remained in the Edgar estate until it was sold in 1920 to Benjamin Morse, who made significant renovations.
