200 Lafayette Street, located in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, is a historic building with a rich past. Originally constructed in 1894, it was designed by architect and builder John T. Williams for The Knickerbocker Telephone Company, one of the early local phone companies aiming to compete with the Bell Telephone Company.
The building is a seven-story, Renaissance-Revival style structure with load-bearing masonry walls, large timber beams, and cast-iron columns. It underwent significant rehabilitation from 2012 to 2016, led by Scott Henson Architect and the Stephen B. Jacobs Group, earning them the 2017 Palladio Award for Adaptive Reuse.
During the restoration, the team preserved the original brickwork, repointed it with mortar matching the original color, and restored the interior brick arches. The exterior cornice was partially rebuilt due to deterioration. The project also included restoring the storefronts with new cast-iron pieces and repainting the facade in its original Richmond Gold color.
Today, the building serves as office space and a storefront showroom, contributing to SoHo's vibrant historic landscape.
