1697 Broadway, Manhattan, NYC, is historically significant as the location of the Ed Sullivan Theater. Originally built in 1927 by Arthur Hammerstein, the son of Oscar Hammerstein I and father of Oscar Hammerstein II, it was designed by architect Herbert J. Krapp. The theater initially seated 1,204 people and featured an ornate Gothic interior with ten massive stained glass windows leading up to a fifty-foot ceiling.
Over the years, the building has been used for various purposes. In the early 1930s, it was converted into a nightclub by Billy Rose. However, it gained fame as a radio and TV studio for CBS starting in 1936. It is most notably remembered as the home of the Ed Sullivan Show from 1957 to 1974. Since 1993, it has been the home of The Late Show with David Letterman.
