15 East 65th Street, Manhattan, New York, is a historic mansion built in 1917 for James J. Van Alen. The house was designed by architect Harry Allan Jacobs and features a stately limestone facade with a Palladian window framed by Corinthian pilasters, reminiscent of Regency-era London architecture.
Van Alen, known as the "American Prince of Wales," was a widowed Anglophile who demolished the existing building on the site, which had previously housed Miss Chisholm's School for girls. The new mansion was constructed during a time when travel to Europe was restricted due to World War I, allowing Van Alen to bring a piece of England to New York.
The house includes four stories, with the top floor and basement reserved for staff. It was sold in 1919 to Rufus Lenoir Patterson Jr., Vice-President of the American Tobacco Company, due to Van Alen's dissatisfaction with Prohibition in the United States.
Today, the building remains a testament to its original design and historical significance in the Lenox Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.
